What Is Selamectin/Sarolaner?

Selamectin/Sarolaner (Revolution Plus, Stronghold Plus) is a combination internal and external antiparasitic medicine for cats and kittens. It is applied topically (on the skin) at the back of the neck between the shoulder blades once every 30 days.

Selamectin is an avermectin antiparasitic, and sarolaner is an isoxazoline ectoparasiticide.

This medicine is FDA-approved for cats and kittens at least 8 weeks old and weighing at least 2.8 lbs (1.3 kg).

Approved Uses

• Prevention of heartworm disease
• Treatment and prevention of flea infestations
• Treatment and control of ear mites
• Treatment and control of roundworms and hookworms
• Prevention of tick infestations (black-legged tick, Gulf Coast tick, American dog tick)

Extra-Label Use

May also be used off-label for chewing lice. This means it is not FDA-approved for this use but may still be recommended by veterinarians.

How Is It Used?

Selamectin/Sarolaner is applied directly to the skin at the back of the neck.

• Use once every 30 days
• Ensure the skin is dry before application
• Part the hair and apply directly to the skin
• Do not touch the area until dry
• Avoid bathing your cat for 24 hours after application
• Prevent pets from licking or rubbing the application site

Monitoring & Follow-Up

• Watch for fewer fleas, ticks, and reduced itching
• Follow-up ear exams may be needed for ear mites
• Fecal tests may be required for intestinal parasites
• Heartworm testing may be required for cats over 6 months old

Warnings

• Do not use in cats under 8 weeks of age
• Do not use if allergic to ingredients
• Use caution in sick, underweight, or frail cats
• Use cautiously in pregnant or nursing animals
• Use caution in cats with MDR1 gene mutation
• Flammable – keep away from fire

Side Effects

• Scratching at application site
• Hair loss or residue at application area
• Greasy or clumped hair
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Decreased appetite
• Tiredness
• Mild skin reactions (redness, hives)

Serious (rare) side effects: seizures, weakness, difficulty walking, dilated pupils, or depression. Contact your veterinarian immediately if observed.

Drug Interactions

Generally safe with vaccines and common medications, but consult your veterinarian if your pet is taking:

• Spironolactone
• Azole antifungals (itraconazole, ketoconazole)
• Cyclosporine
• Diltiazem
• Erythromycin

Safety for Pet Owners

• Keep out of reach of children
• Wash hands after application
• Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing
• Do not touch application area until dry

Overdose & Missed Dose

• Overdose risk is low but contact a vet if concerned
• If a dose is missed, give when remembered
• Do not double the dose

• Store below 86°F (30°C)
• Keep in original packaging
• Protect from heat, flame, and ignition sources
